Romuald Traugutt – project of the medal

Project of the medal showing a right profile of a man’s head, with his left hand raised in front of his face. Around the edge you can see an inscription written in negative saying “Romuald Traugut 1833-1933”.

Romuald Tragutt was one of the dictators of the January Uprising. Before the news about the Uprising reached Lithuania, Traugutt refused to join the politics. For a long time he did not want to take part in the uprising, but it eventually happened in April 1863. He was commanding the Kobryń unit and on 17 May they successfully ambushed one of the Russian troops in Horki. In July 1863, he stayed at the property of Eliza Orzeszkowa near Kobryń. Later on, Traugutt decided to come to Warsaw.

He got arrested by the Russian police on the night of 10-11April 1864 at 2 a.m. At first, he was held captive in Pawiak prison and later moved to X Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel. The enemy attempted to get him to talk about Uprising’s leadership, but Traugutt did not disclose any information.

On 19 July the Field Auditorium issued a court judgement. Traugutt got relegated and sentenced to death. He was hung in the roundabouts of Warsaw Citadel on 5 August 1864. The dead insurgents were awarded by the president Ignacy Mościcki with the Cross of Independence with Swords on 21 January 1933.

Traugutt was the first husband of Szczepkowski’s son-in-law’s grandmother.

The medal is a thin negative of the medal, retouched and covered with dark green patina. It is 19 cm in the diameter and is 2.5 cm thick.
